Many of us supplement, however why do we supplement? What benefits do we receive from supplementing? And I suppose most importantly why should we even consider supplementing. Well many of us take vitamins and minerals or other similar items to give our health and immune system a general boost, with a lot of us taking such supplements because we believe what we read regarding the health effects/benefits.

The truth of the matter is, that a lot of us supplement and take vitamins purely because we do not get enough of vitamin content from our diets. Unfortunately simple sugar foods and processed foods are not abundant with the essential nutrients etc we require.

Fruit and Vegetables have lots of vitamins and antioxidant effects which are beneficial to us and this is the main reason why doctors and nurses and other health professionals promote eating such foods, however the cold hard truth is that a lot of us still do not eating enough of these foods.

Despite all the glum news, this cloud has a silver lining in respect that a lot of people choose to eat meat and within meat lies lots of vitamins and minerals. The most important of which is Iron. Meat has a staggering amount of iron content which is essential for general well being. This basically means that if you eat an adequate amount of meat, then you should have sufficient amounts of iron floating around your body.

The bad news is present for vegetarians as unfortunately without meat the body is not getting as many nutrients as it needs.

It also may not surprise you to learn that as a nation we are becoming more lazy and it seems that being lazy and having a poor diet go hand in hand. Just think about stereotypes for a moment who tend to be larger in some professions compared to others. A profession which may spring to mind could be long distance truck drivers. We tend to have these stereotypical ideas purely because people like this do not get much spare time and then rely on processed food etc which tends to result in weight gain.

So in a world with such temptations and food with a lack of nutrients etc, what should you do? The answer is quite simple and involves being in tune with your body. Have you ever had a sugar craving before or a meat craving before? Your body is craving those foods for certain calorie types and certain vitamins. So listen carefully to your body and don’t become confused with cravings and what you ‘think’ you should have

So you may have decided that you wish to start supplementing, and whilst you may have made this decision, you may be asking yourself the question of when should you supplement? The answer is entirely up to you. A lot of people tend to supplement after they start feeling ill or lethargic and some people supplement to ensure they reduce the possibilities of feel ill etc. The choice is yours.
